Can you take a 3 month holiday from your business?

By Coach Hein

It’s the start of 2021 and most business owners are coming back from a well-deserved break after a really challenging 2020. When you ask most business owners about their break they would normally say “It was awesome, but too short and I wish the business did not interrupt my break!”

To understand this better, one has to consider the difference between someone that is self-employed vs. a true business owner/entrepreneur. The journey to becoming self-employed usually flows from being a student, an employee and typically someone who will start a business in a profession that they are familiar with. This means a plumber will start a plumbing business an electrician will start an electrical business etc.

Sadly, our formal education system does not teach people the skills that they need to run a proper business, i.e. marketing, sales, finance, systems, delivery, building a team etc.  This means that our friend the plumber or the electrician is self-employed and if he is not in the van working there is no income.

Secondly, all the knowledge of the business is in his head and without him around the business and team cannot function to its full potential. Lastly, sometimes the areas where there is a skills gap typically in finance and systems etc. get botched up badly, often leading to catastrophic surprises, stress and drama! Besides the stress, pressure the self-employed are effectively the business and they cannot take sufficient break from the business to recharge their batteries. This inevitably leads to burn out and business failure. It is a well-documented statistic that approximately 80% of small business will fail before their 5th birthday...

So, the great news is that there is a much better way to do this. At ActionCOACH, we help the self-employed to progress to business owners and entrepreneurs. These terms are often used loosely but a true business owner runs a commercial profitable enterprise that works without him or her. This means that the business is separated from the business owner and is not dependent on the physical presence or work of the owner.

This is achieved by coaching business owners to work ON the business as opposed to IN the business, meaning that the primary work of the business owner is to build the systems and team and top of the basic business mastery fundamentals and to extract him/herself over time from doing any of the physical activity required for the day to day functioning of the business. When business owners have built a business along these principles, they can actually take really long holidays and return to a business that has traded profitably in their absence.

We have the system and processes to help you transition from being self-employed to a business owner and entrepreneur! Reach out today to start your journey and transform your business and personal life.
